What PPF does
PPF is a clear, self-healing urethane film applied over your paint. It takes the rock chips, sand and road debris that would otherwise hit the paint, and light scratches in the film disappear when it warms up in the sun. Installed properly, it is invisible, and it lasts 7 to 10 years or more before it needs replacing.
It is a different job from ceramic coating. Film stops physical impacts; a coating makes paint glossy and easy to clean. Many owners put film on the front and a coating everywhere else. The comparison is in ceramic coating vs PPF.
What moves the price
- Coverage. The largest factor: a full front covers the areas that take most chips; full body covers everything.
- The vehicle. A truck has more front end to cover than a car, which is why full front on a truck costs more.
- The shape of the panels. Complex bumpers and vents take longer to wrap cleanly.
- The paint underneath. Film locks in whatever is under it, so heavily swirled paint may need correcting first.
How much of the car to cover
- Full front is the choice for most commuters. It covers the hood, fenders, bumper, headlights and mirrors, which take most of the chips on the highway.
- Track pack adds the rocker panels and other areas that take debris thrown up by the wheels, popular on trucks and lifted vehicles.
- Full body is for show cars, exotics and cars you plan to keep forever.
